Does your ultrasound make you anxious ? You might be one of those 5 women...

Every second woman in India may suffer from PCOS. Are you well versed with its impact on your life ?
Obesity, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes are a few of the well-known lifestyle diseases of modern India. But this list is not exhaustive... 26% of women worldwide suffer from Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome which is one of the most common hormonal disorders. Approximately 2 in 10 women in North, West & South India (each), while 4 in 10 women in East India have PCOS. The irony of this syndrome is that 1 out of 2 women either lack awareness or remain undiagnosed. This trend is prevalent in reproductive age i.e. 15-30 years.
Irregular periods, amenorrhea (missing menstruation for 3 consecutive months), hirsutism (abnormal hair growth) & enlarged ovaries with cysts (follicles) are the firstmost signs to be compelled to visit your gynecologist for further diagnosis. Other symptoms include weight gain, thinning of hairs on head, infertility, acne, pelvic pain (during periods), mood changes, headaches & poor or no sleep. A common syndrome of reproductive age, PCOS leads to infertility in middle-aged women while PCOS leads to cancer in older women. According to research, a drop in 5% of weight can help women to regularize their menstruation cycle to an extent & lessen the other symptoms.
The Biggest Challenge with PCOS diagnosis during teenage is the overlap of symptoms with the usual pubertal changes. If PCOS goes undetected, it leads to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure & cardiac disorders. It thus becomes a never-ending vicious trap that women fall for if the right precautionary interventions aren't done at the right time. There is no permanent cure of PCOS but possible treatments exist to lessen the symptoms & related co-morbidities.
The only solution to this diagnosed & undiagnosed PCOS problem is to be at your ideal body weight, follow healthy eating habits (inclusion of all food groups & exclusion of preservatives, artificial flavours/colours, & excess sugars & refined carbs) & try to indulge in at least one physical activity be it walking, running or any sport...
